Biographies
The overview above is drawn from the following published accounts. Read them in the original:
John Dilworth+
RAUT, Jean Born circa. 1719, died 1791 Rennes France. Guarneri model. Coarse workmanship with yellow-red varnish. Henleycites some labels with ‘Giovanni’ rather than ‘Jean’. [Henley]
Cecie Stainer+
A native of Bretagne, who worked in Rennes till about 1790. A few violins of his are known, made on the pattern of Guarneri, with red varnish.
Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+
Nicht ungeschickt; die wenigen Geigen, die man von ihm kennt, zeigen zwar gutes Holz, gute Arbeit und rothen Lack, sind aber plump in der Form und haben einen näselnden Ton.
Henri Poidras+
This good class maker has produced little. The fact that the sonority of his instruments is confined, is due to heavy workmanship. Red varnish.
