Sohn von Peter Althenn und wie dieser Instrumentenmacher und Musiker. Er war Mitglied der städtischen Kapelle und erwarb 1793 das Bürgerrecht und wurde damit selbstständiger Meister. Eine sechschörige Zither von ihm besitzt die Sammlung Crosby Brown in New-York (Nr. 1297).
