Er erlernte zwar in Mittenwald die Geigenmacherei, verlegte sich aber frühzeitig fast ausschliesslich auf das Zithermachen. In seinen Anzeigen bezeichnete er jedoch seine Werkstatt ausdrücklich als »beste Reparatur-Werkstatt für Violinen etc.«.
