John Dilworth+
Georg Born circa. 1665 Vils, d.c.1740 Erfurt. Broad Tyrolean model. Most dictionaries mention some training in Italy, but this is impossible to determine and seems unlikely and based on reports of a Latinised version of his label.
Cecie Stainer+
Son of Franz Schonger, he also worked at Erfurt. He was a better maker than his father, and left some very good violins, made on the Italian pattern ; he was also considered a clever repairer of old instruments.
Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+
Der Stammvater der Familie. Nach einer Familientradition soll er aus Tyrol oder Italien stammen, wo seine Vorfahren »Scogneri« geheissen haben sollen. Glaubwürdiger ist aber, wenn ein Schonger wirklich in Italien gelebt haben sollte, dass er dort nur seinen Namen verwelscht hatte. Die Tyroler Heimath ist dagegen wahrscheinlich, da dort der Name Schonger nachweisbar ist; auch die Mutter Eberle’s war bekanntlich eine geborene Schonger aus Vils.
