Schüler seines Vaters Johann Georg S. In seinen jüngeren Jahren arbeitete er nach dem üblichen Vogtländer Modell; später ist das Bestreben erkennbar, italienische Vorbilder nachzuahmen. Wenn er auch keine Meisterwerke schuf, gehören seine Geigen doch in der Regel zu den besseren. Einen Zettel hat er nur selten eingeklebt.
