Nachdem er die Schule verlassen hatte, kam er in mannigfache Beziehung zu den musikalischen Kreisen seiner Vaterstadt, und bald vertiefte er sich in das Studium des Geigenmachens. Seine erste Geige machte er 1865. Er brachte es im Laufe der Zeit zu anerkennenswerther Geschicklichkeit und ahmt vorzugsweise Joseph Guarneri nach. Er verwendet einen guten Öllack und schnitzt recht hübsche Schnecken.
