In den Bürger- und Steuerbüchern in Wien wird er nicht erwähnt, aber in Geigen, die in der Arbeit an die Leidolff erinnern, findet sich sein Name von 1750 an. Er ahmte das Stainer-Modell nach und hatte einen rothbraunen Lack. Er soll ein Sohn des Mathias Thir gewesen sein und wohnte vielleicht in einem Wiener Vorort. Eine von ihm 1795 angefertigte Guitarre aus türkischem Haselnussholz mit elf Metallsaiten besitzt die Sammlung der Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde in Wien (No. 36).
