Auf der Insel Malta hat es nach der Auskunft des dortigen Gouverneurs niemals berufsmässige Geigenmacher gegeben, wohl aber Leute, die Musikinstrumente ausbesserten, oder Dilettanten, die Geigen machten. Ein solcher war auch Tonna, der immerhin eine gewisse Geschicklichkeit besass und für einen Contrabass aus Vogelahorn mit abgerundeten Ecken in London 1851 eine ehrenvolle Erwähnung erhielt.
