BATOV (BASCHOV), Ivan Andreyevitch Born 1767 Moscow, died 1841 St Petersburg Russia. Serf in the service of Count Sheremetiev. Trained as a luthier by Vasily Vladimirov. Made instruments for the court orchestra. Emancipated from serfdom in 1822 after he made a gift of a cello to Sheremetiev, and lived in St Petersburg, making mostly guitars and balalaikas. Silver medal awarded at the St. Petersburg exhibition 1829. Violins are of Stradivari- or Guarneri-derived models. 41 produced. Three violas, six cellos, and some double basses also recorded. Three violins in the Hermitage Museum, St Petersburg dated 1810, 1816, and 1818. Workmanship cautious but well-finished and exhibiting some eccentric details. His label is much misused in cheap Saxon factory instruments. [Moscow]
