BOVIS, François Born 1864 Levens, nr. Nice, died 1914 Nice France. Worked for Bianchi from 1874, eventually taking over the business in 1880, in turn continued after Bovis’ death by his widow and latterly his son Charles, below. Appointed luthier to the Monte Carlo orchestra. New instruments made mostly on a Guarneri model, but some of personal design. Generally very proficient workmanship and a high level of finish, with a good red-brown varnish. Awarded Diplomas at Turin Exhibition 1911. Franciscus Bovis / Nicaensis / fecit anno, 1899
