Originally a silk-weaver in Shoreditch. Pupil and assistant of Thomas Kennedy c.1800. Subsequently established his own shop in Wheeler Street, Spitalfields. Good quality work, but unremarkable for the time and place. Some have good red varnish, otherwise a tendency towards a dull brown. — John Dilworth

BROWN, James (I) Born 1759, died 1834 London UK. Originally a silk-weaver in Shoreditch. Pupil and assistant of Thomas Kennedy c.1800. Started violin-making in 1804, under Thomas Kennedy. Ordinary work ; tone fairly good for orchestral purposes.
Cecie Stainer+
b. 1755 or 1759; d Sept., 1830 or 1834. Was a silk weaver in Shoreditch, London; but, 1804, learnt violin making under Thomas Kennedy, and established himself in Wheeler Street, Spitalfields, as repairer and maker of instruments.
Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+
Er war ursprünglich Seidenweber und erlernte erst im Jahre 1804 bei
Thomas Kennedy den Geigenbau, eröffnete dann in der Wheeler st. Spitalfields
