John Dilworth
CALACE, Raffaele (I) Born 1863, died 1934 Naples Italy. Son of Antonio Calace, above. Worked with his brother Nicolas-Marie from 1900. Mandolin virtuoso and composer. Made guitars, mandolins, lutes, and all bowed instruments, including a violin for Mussolini in 1927. Twelve gold medals and diplomas. Violins of undistinguished commercial appearance with very flat arch, exaggerated edge flute, and crude red varnish. Exported in large numbers to America and Japan, and he was awarded a title by the Japanese Emperor as a result of his concerts there. Liuteria Classica Napolitana. / Comm.
