CHANOT, Frederick William Born 1857, died 1911 London UK. Son of Georges Chanot (II), below. Trained in Paris with his grandfather Georges (I) from 1864 to 1872. Returned to London, working for his father until 1881. Established independently at 179 Wardour Street and later Berners Street, London, he also published music under his own imprint, ‘Edition Chanot’. Finally moved to 5 Soho Street. Produced three grades of violins; quality A, 20 guineas; quality B, 15 guineas; quality C, 10 guineas. Gained a reputation as one of the leading connoisseurs in London, but his expertise in restoration and copying old instruments led to some rather dubious business. Particularly skilled at varnish work, he followed the family tradition in making antique finished instruments with great success. He employed Carlo Giuseppe Oddone and Giovanni Gaida, both talented makers who produced work for the Chanot label. F. W. Chanot. London. / Fecit A.D. 1899 F.W.A / ‘Le Messie’ F. W. Chanot / F. W. Chanot. London. / Fecit A.D. 1905. F.W.
