CHIARELLI, Andrea Born circa. 1675, died 1699 Messina, Sicily Italy. Musician and maker of lutes, violins, and theorbos. Worked also in Rome and Naples. Violins of Maggini model with doubled purfling, and deep red-brown varnish. Fétis cites an archlute dated 1698. Andreas Chiarelli / fecit Messina / in Via Provinciale. 1694

Cecie Stainer

b. 1675, Messina ; d. 1699. A maker of lutes and theorbos. He was also a celebrated lute player; went to Rome and Naples for his musical education, then returned to Messina and tried to improve the construction of his favourite instrument. He made several theorbos and arch-lutes; one of the latter is dated 1698.

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff

Ein Lautenmacher, der aber berühmter als Componist und Virtuose auf der
Archilaute war. Er war ein sogenanntes Wunderkind und erhielt seine Ausbildung
in Rom und Neapel. Es werden ihm auch einige Verbesserungen an
seinem Instrumente nachgerühmt; die von ihm gemachten Theorben und Archilauten
nennt Fétis, der eine solche von 1698 besass, die besten, die je gemacht
