Biographies
The overview above is drawn from the following published accounts. Read them in the original:
John Dilworth+
COLE, James Worked circa. 1845-1892 Manchester UK. Pupil of Tarr and associated with Craske. Work very variable in quality, but cellos generally more successful. After 1858 work branded internally: ‘J. Cole’ Cole (Senior) / Raby Street / Moss Side / Manchester James Cole / Fecit Manchester / 1857.
William Meredith Morris+
He was a pupil of William Tarr, and worked afterwards with George Craske. I have not seen any of his work, and cannot pronounce an opinion ; but old Tarr did not entertain a very high opinion of his abilities. He used a label in his early work, but later stamped ” S. Cole ” inside on the back.
Cecie Stainer+
A maker in Manchester. He learnt his trade there, first with Tarr and then under George Craske. Until 1858 he used a label, but after that stamped “J. Cole” inside his instruments.
Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+
Lernte zuerst bei Tarr und dann bei George Crask. Seine Geigen sind
gute Orchesterinstrumente. Bis 1858 gebrauchte er einen Zettel, später nur
mehr eine Brandmarke.
