DU MESNIL, Jacques Worked circa. 1655-1662 Paris France. Known for a pochette dated 1662 and ‘miniature violin’ in the Musée de la Musique, Paris. The violin is heavily inlaid and fitted with a carved head. Manuscript label: Du Mesnil / à Paris 1665

A maker in Paris about 1655-60. A curious little violin is in the Paris Conservatoire Collection, with a MS. label dated 1655. The back and sides are of maple wood, the front of cedar, the purfling inlaid with silver and whalebone, and the head is carved into a woman’s face. The varnish, a red-brown colour, is excellent, and all the details show a clever maker.

Das beste Werk, das man von ihm kennt, ist die hübsche, mit Elfenbein und Silber eingelegte Tanzmeistergeige, die das Pariser Conservatorium bewahrt. Die F-Löcher zeigen den Stil Amati’s, das Holz ist sehr schon und der rothbraune Lack vortrefflich. Am Wirbelkasten ist ein Frauenköpfchen angebracht.
