Gardner at Atholl Estate and amateur maker. Known locally as ‘Bearded Willie’; a large man whose work is very coarse. Stainer model, usually painted purfling, made in primitive style with ‘through’ neck, rather than a separate interior top block. Yellow spirit varnish. John Dilworth+

DUFF, William Born 1810, died 1892 Dunkeld, Perthshire, Scotland UK. Gardner at Atholl Estate and amateur maker. Known locally as ‘Bearded Willie’; a large man whose work is very coarse. Stainer model, usually painted purfling, made in primitive style with ‘through’ neck, rather than a separate interior top block. Yellow spirit varnish. Also made and rehaired bows using hair from horses in the Estate’s stables. Made by Wm. Duff / Pulney Cottage / Dunkeld 1860

A game-keeper on the Athole estate, and an amateur maker. In- different work, poor varnish, but fair tone. Label : —

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+

Er wurde 1839 Jäger bei der schottischen Adelsfamilie Atholl und machte in seinen freien Stunden viele und recht gute Geigen nach dem Stainer-Modell. Einige Unterweisung mag
er von Peter Hardie bekommen haben, mit dem er später bekannt wurde. Seine Geigen sind oft sehr kunstvoll eingelegt, und auch seine Bögen waren gut.
