EDLINGER, Thomas (II) Worked from 1656, died 1690 Augsburg Germany. Son of Thomas Edlinger (I), above. Son-in-law of Hummel, a lute maker. Workshop in Augsburg at the sign ‘Bey den drey Geigen’. Work rarely encountered. Full, slightly boxy, arching with narrow edge flute. Distinctly squarish outline, slightly flattened across the end bouts and with long straight approaches to the small corners. Long open soundholes. Rich dark brown varnish. Vaguely viola d’amore-style scroll with large eye. Chiefly known as a lute maker. A pochette, viol, and lute preserved in the De Wit collection, Grassi Museum, Leipzig.
