Moved with family to Nice, before trying apprenticeship at sea and then as a student of architecture. Later became acquainted with a luthier Pierre Rossi with whom he learnt violin making. GAUD, Philippe Born 1905 Venice Italy, Worked from 1954 New York USA. Moved with family to Nice, before trying apprenticeship at sea and then as a student of architecture. Later became acquainted with a luthier Pierre Rossi with whom he learnt violin making. Emigrated to New York 1954, where he established a workshop and remained active until the 1960s. Fine work on Stradivari model; in particular the ‘Sarasate’ violin in the Paris Conservatoire collection (Musée de la Musique). Excellent materials and workmanship.
