GOFFRILLER, Francesco Born 1692 Venice, d.c.1740 Udine Italy. Son of Matteo Gofriller, below. Left his father’s workshop in 1714 to work in Udine, and seems to have predeceased him. Although generally of coarser finish and a little less disciplined than that of Matteo, Francesco’s work has great character and benefits from the beautiful dark red varnish and golden ground in common use in Venice. The scroll is distinctive: slender, quite weak and upright, with a small eye and narrow chamfer. The rest of the instrument can be of several patterns, from a fine low-arched Stradivari type with wide-set soundholes, or a more Amatisé model with higher slightly pinched arch. The corners are broad and square, the purfling a little clumsy. The former type have been known to be relabelled as Bergonzi. Original labels are rare. [Pio]

Brother of Matteo ; probably worked as his collaborator in Venice. He made few instruments, and seldom put his label into them ; they were of fairly good work, with ugly yellow-brown varnish.
