Angeblich erst Schüler von Banks und dann von Wamsley. Seine Arbeit ist sauber, und
namentlich seine Violoncelli und Bässe sind gut. Er wechselte seine Wohnung mehrfach und gebrauchte verschiedene Hausmarken (Ladenschilder), so z. B. seit etwa 1750 »at ye Violin« (Angel Court, Westminster) und »at the Harp and Flute« (Haymarket). Alle seine vier Söhne erzog er zu Geigenmachern, sie wurden seine Gehilfen, und nur der Älteste
von ihnen erreichte eine gewisse Selbstständigkeit
