First recorded in London in 1738 as a furniture maker, he then went to Marienborg and Herrnhag in Saxony as a preacher in the Moravian church, returning to England in the Moravian community in Fulneck, Yorkshire. HINTZ, John Frederick Born 1711 Greifenhagen, Szczecin Poland, died 1772 London UK. First recorded in London in 1738 as a furniture maker, he then went to Marienborg and Herrnhag in Saxony as a preacher in the Moravian church, returning to England in the Moravian community in Fulneck, Yorkshire. Established in 1754 at ‘The Golden Guittar in Little Newport Street, corner of Ryder’s Court, Leicester Fields’ in London. By 1763 was able to advertise as ‘Guittar maker to her Majesty and the Royal Family’. Important and influential as a maker of English guitars, he also made some viols, but no violins as far as is known. [BVMA]
