Von Hause aus war er Mechaniker und mehrere Jahre lang Gehilfe bei
Thom. A. Edison. Verschiedene Erfindungen, die er gemacht hat, sicherten
ihm ein schönes Einkommen; da er aber seit seinem 11. Lebensjahre das Violinspiel
mit Eifer betrieb, fing er auch an, mit seiner Geige Versuche anzustellen.
Er studirte das Geigenmachen theoretisch und machte Anfangs zu seinem Vergnügen
auch eine Anzahl Geigen; im Jahre 1886 aber konnte er sich bereits als
Geigenmacher in Northampton niederlassen. Seine Arbeiten, die alten Meistern
nachgeahmt sind, werden gelobt und in Amerika gern gekauft, und obwohl er
nie mehr als zwei Gehilfen beschäftigte, hat er doch bereits über 1200 Violinen,
Violen und Violoncelli gebaut. Seine Biographie erschien im März 1894 im
»Boston Leader«.
