Er war 43 Jahre Gärtner in Auchintoul und begann im Jahre 1884 Geigen zu machen, nachdem er in Davidson’s Buch die Anleitung dazu gefunden hatte. Er machte etwa 40 Violinen nach dem Stradivari-Modell und verwendete meistens Spiritus-, zuletzt auch Öllack.
