The violin department operated from 1888 to 1967 employing many distinguished craftsmen. Annual catalogues Lyon & Healy Rare Old Violins are a valuable archive of fine instruments, published 1890-1925. Similarly the Hawley Collection of Violins (1904) is a collectible edition and important source book. The shop also distributed the Whitelaw violin varnish made by James Whitelaw in Glasgow, popular with many early 20th century makers. [Wenberg]
