Maker Overview

Life

Emile Auguste Ouchard (1900-1969) was born in 1900 in Mirecourt, France, and passed away in 1969 in Gan, France. He was a distinguished bow maker, following in the footsteps of his father, Emile François, from whom he also received his training. Emile Auguste Ouchard worked alongside his father for Cuniot until 1922, at which point they established an independent venture together. In 1937, he succeeded his father in the family business and began to use his own distinctive brand on his bows. He relocated to Paris in 1940, establishing his workshop at 54 rue de Rome. In 1946, Emile Auguste Ouchard moved to New York to work for L. Rudié. A significant contract to produce bows for William Lewis & Son in Chicago was secured in 1948, leading him to purchase a home in Batavia, Illinois, where he resided until 1951. He then returned to New York to work for J. Français. By 1960, he moved back to France, settling in Gan, near Pau, where he continued his craft despite declining health.

Characteristics

Innovation
Emile Auguste Ouchard adopted modifications to the underslide of his bows, which were suggested by M. Millant and were in line with designs developed by W. E. Hill & Sons in England.
Branding
From 1937, he began to use his own distinctive brand. His bows are known to be branded with various marks, including "E.A.OUCHARD Fils", "E.A.OUCHARD PARIS", "Emile A. OUCHARD – NEW YORK", and "Emile A. OUCHARD [Millant/Raffin]".

Influence and legacy

  • Mentorship: Emile Auguste Ouchard was the son and pupil of the esteemed bow maker Emile François.
  • Early Career: He gained early experience working with his father for Cuniot before they established their independent workshop.
