Jean Baptiste Paquotte

PAQUOTTE, Jean Baptiste Born 1827 Mirecourt, died 1900 Paris France. Nephew of Sébastien Paquotte, below. Apprenticed to Simon as a bow maker. Later studied violin making with Sébastian in Paris 1841-1849. Worked for Lafleur until 1863 when he succeeded to his uncle’s business at rue de l’Ecole-de-Medecine, Paris. Moved to 99 boulevard St-Germain 1877 and retired in 1879. Highly regarded as a connoisseur. His own violins and bows are of high quality, using fine materials.

Nephew of Sebastien Paquotte, under whom he worked for eight years; he then worked under Lafleur for fourteen years. By the time he succeeded to his uncle’s business he had gained great experience in his trade, and may be ranked among the best Parisian makers of his time. In 1877 he settled at 99, Faubourg Saint-Germain, but retired from business in 1888, and was succeeded by his sons, Henri Felix and Placide. He died 1900.

Ursprünglich Bogenmacher, kam er 1841 nach Paris und wurde Schüler
seines Oheims Seb. P., bei dem er acht Jahre blieb, hierauf arbeitete er 14 Jahre
bei Lafleur und übernahm 1863 Seb. Paquotte’s Werkstatt, die er als tüchtiger
Künstler mit grossem Erfolg fortführte, bis er sich 1888 zurückzog und sein
Geschäft seinen Söhnen überliess.
