PEMBERTON, J. Worked circa. 1570-1585 London UK. As above; the name seems to have been conjured up to explain the engraved initials ‘JP 1578’ inscribed on the spurious instrument known as the violin of Queen Elizabeth I, supposedly presented to her by the Earl of Leicester. This was exhibited at the South Kensington Museum (now the Victoria & Albert Museum) in 1872, but has been shown to be a fabrication of various parts, both primitive and modern.

Ein seiner Zeit ziemlich berühmter englischer Lautenmacher, dem auch die
mit nebenstehender Marke bezeichnete Violine von sehr eigenthümlicher Form
des Earls of Warwick (im South K. M. 1872 ausgestellt) zugeschrieben wird. Die Decke scheint übrigens neueren Datums zu sein. Diese Violine — ihre Echtheit vorausgesetzt — wäre demnach das älteste bekannte Beispiel einer in England gemachten.
