John Dilworth

Carl Friedrich (I) Born 1743, died 1798. Admitted to the guild of violin makers 1765. Distinguished maker of the Saxon school. Prolific maker. High Stainer model with elegant Amatisé edges and purfling. Scroll also quite Cremonese in proportion. Fine materials with good honey-gold varnish. Some examples with decoration in the form of extra purfling or ebony or ivory inlay. Labels often indicate Cremona, but with no basis in fact. Some branded within a heart shaped purfling cartouche on the upper back: ‘C. F. P.’ Carl Friedrich Pfretzschner, / prope Violino carRespontent / Romani Cremona Ao 1773 Carl Friedrich Pfretzschner / Cremonien Hironimi Fili Antoni Ne. / p.s. fecit. Ao 1773
