Apprenticed with Matthias Keller in Philadelphia, and succeeded to his business in 1857. Created the American Star Violin Company, a mass manufacturer of quality violins later inherited by his son Eugene John Albert, above. Guarneri models. Fine work with golden-brown spirit varnish, often using American maple. Signed directly on the back interior, or with handwritten labels.
