John Dilworth
BALLANTYNE, Robert Born 1796 Hulton Knowe, d.c.1870 Glasgow, Scotland UK. Worked in Edinburgh from 1827, from the same address as John Blair, 8 Potterrow. The two men evidently had some association and there are obvious similarities in their work, but from 1831 to 1834 Ballantyne was at 1 West College St., then at 35 High St., close to Thomas Hardie. In 1841 he moved to Glasgow, remaining there until his death. His work is rare, but full of character. Slightly squared outline, but well-regulated. Fine Stradivarian soundholes, set upright and a little close. Good quality clear red-orange varnish, well applied. Some eccentric instruments; at least one without corners and with flame shaped soundholes. Branded beneath button: ‘R.Ballantyne Edin’ R. Ballantyne Fecit. Glasgow. 1844 [Rattray]
