Trained as a watch-maker. Later apprenticed as a violin maker to A. Meinel in Basel. Travelled abroad before returning to Basel to work for Paul Meinel. Established his own shop at 28 Steingraben 1920. Suffered ill-health from 1950 and retired in 1962, leaving the business in the care of his son, Fr\u{2026} — John Dilworth

BAUMGARTNER, Fritz (I) Born 1891 Liestal, died 1975 Basel Switzerland. Trained as a watch-maker. Later apprenticed as a violin maker to A. Meinel in Basel. Travelled abroad before returning to Basel to work for Paul Meinel. Established his own shop at 28 Steingraben 1920. Suffered ill-health from 1950 and retired in 1962, leaving the business in the care of his son, Fritz (II), below. Excellent maker. Accurate Stradivari and Guarneri models. Yellow to red-brown varnish over pale gold ground. Over 300 violins, violas, and cellos extant, as well as various historical and modern plucked and bowed instruments. 320 bows, including Voirin copies marked only beneath the frog, otherwise branded ‘F.
