John Dilworth
BERGMANN, Andras (I) Born 1862 Nagymaros, died 1934 Budapest Hungary. Pupil of Bartek. Worked for Pilat, Remenyi, and Schunda. Established in Budapest 1898, at the sign ‘The Cremoneser’. Some 100 violins on Stradivari and Brescian models, although the majority, including violas and cellos, made on a Guarneri pattern. Employed several assistants, including his son Andras (II), F. Bikszegi, A. Werner, J. Michelberger, A. Baratury and S. Komaromy. Labels of instruments made entirely by himself include the text: ‘eigene Handarbeit’.
