John Dilworth

BIMBI, Bartolomeo Worked 1750-1781 Siena & Florence Italy. An instrument dealer in Sienna from c.1750, he was probably a pupil of Gabrielli in Florence c.1760. Remained in Florence as luthier to the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. Fine maker in the Gabrielli manner. Exaggerated Stainer model with very bulbous arching, golden-yellow varnish, very neatly carved and concentric scroll in the Stainer style. Viola dated 1770 in the Cherubini collection, Florence. This instrument is in largely original condition and was made without rib linings. Manuscript label: Bartolomeo Bimbi fece / in Firenze l’anno 1770
