BRUGÈRE, François ‘Malakoff’ Born 1822, died 1875 Mirecourt France Brother of Charles Joseph Brugère, above. Worked for Pierre Silvestre in Lyons, Daniel in Marseilles and Bonnel in Rouen. Returned to Mirecourt, working indirectly for Justin Derazey, producing many instruments with his label. According to Vannes, he adopted the name ‘Malakoff’ after serving in the Crimea in 1855. Generally good, highly professional work in typical Mirecourt style, but often rather heavy and overstated in size and detail. Cellos and double basses better proportioned and admired.
