BUCHANAN, David Robert Born 1912 London, died 1999 Eynsham, Oxford UK. Pupil of G. Wulme-Hudson in Palmer’s Green, London. Active from the late 1920s. Early work with dark brown varnish. Served in the RAF during the Second World War and continued to make instruments using any available woods. Some of labels of this period refer to the ‘Western Desert.’ After the war moved to Lechlade, Gloucestershire where he continued to make violins and violas. Many feature a grafted neck, a split and matched scroll, idiosyncratic but neatly cut purfling, and very fine materials. In the early 1960s he moved to Eynsham, near Oxford where he continued making violins and violas, often with magnificent one piece backs. Varnishes achieved a brilliant translucency. Continued making instruments until his death.
