CAPELA, Domingos Ferreira Born 1904, died 1976 Anta, Espinho Portugal Apprenticed as a cooper (barrel-maker) and cabinet maker. Began repairing violins and in 1924 commenced making. Awarded first and second place medals at Wieniawski competition, Poznan 1972. Assisted by his son Joaquim Domingos (Born 1934) who later became a very distinguished maker in his own right. His work is very well finished in the modern Italian school, covered with a very even spirit-based varnish of golden-orange colour. Stradivari model, although early work in a more Iberian tradition with large head and slender pegbox. Personal model with upright, widely spaced ‘f’ holes. Domingos F.
