CARON Worked circa. 1770-1790 Versailles France. Held the appointment of luthier to Marie Antoinette. Rather broad Amatisé model. Neat workmanship and soft orange-yellow or brown varnish, although violas mostly varnished in dark brown. Worked in Versailles, 1775-85. Was maker to the Queen. His instruments are not in any way remarkable, an alto, well made, with brown-black varnish, was labelled: ” Caron, luthier de la Heine, rue Royale. a Versailles, 1777″; a similar label is dated 1775. A ten-stringed theorbo in the Paris Conservatoire Collection is dated ” a Versailles, rue Satory, 1785.”

Er bezeichnet sich als Hoflautenmacher der Königin und wohnte erst in der
Rue Royale und dann in der Rue Satory. Er ist zwar kein hervorragender
Meister, aber seine Arbeit ist gut; er ahmte italienische Modelle nach; nur sein
brauner Lack ist zu dunkel. Eine französische Lira von ihm besitzt
Claudius in Malmö, eine zehnsaitige Theorbe mit den Initialen der Königin
Maria Antoinette im runden Schallloch das Museum des Pariser Conservatoriums,
