John Dilworth+

CARON Worked circa. 1770-1790 Versailles France. Held the appointment of luthier to Marie Antoinette. Rather broad Amatisé model. Neat workmanship and soft orange-yellow or brown varnish, although violas mostly varnished in dark brown. Ten-stringed theorbo inlaid with the initials of Marie Antoinette preserved in Musée de la Musique, Paris. Caron / Luthier de la Reine / Rue Royale / à Versailles 1775

Cecie Stainer+

Worked in Versailles, 1775-85. Was maker to the Queen. His instruments are not in any way remarkable, an alto, well made, with brown-black varnish, was labelled: ” Caron, luthier de la Heine, rue Royale. a Versailles, 1777″; a similar label is dated 1775. A ten-stringed theorbo in the Paris Conservatoire Collection is dated ” a Versailles, rue Satory, 1785.”

No. 224.
