Cecie Stainer+

A maker in Genoa about 1750-80. His instruments are fairly well made, he used yellow varnish. A violin, which has since been carefully enlarged, was on a small model, very much arched, and it was labelled: ” Paulus Castello, Genuae, anno 1774.”

Seine Arbeit ist äusserlich sehr schön, erinnert an die der Gagliani und
geht auf das Amatimodell zurück. Im Allgemeinen ist er trotz alledem nicht
sehr geschätzt, da er oft nur mittelmässiges Holz verwendete. Sein gelber Lack ist dagegen nicht schlecht. Eine seiner schönsten Geigen, ein wahres Prachtexemplar
aus der Spätzeit des italienischen Geigenbaus, ist aus der Sammlung Snoeck (No. 508) in der kgl. Sammlung in Berlin zu finden.
