CHANOT, Georges Adolphe Born 1855 London, died 1923 Manchester UK. Eldest son and pupil of Georges Chanot (II), above. Established at Manchester 1879, supported by Joseph Chardon who provided a fine Stradivari cello to launch his trading activities. This also provided the pattern for several very fine copies by Chanot. Other work is modelled after the recognised classical masters. Medals at the ‘Inventions Exhibition’, London 1885, and in Manchester and Liverpool. Like his father, he also became embroiled in ‘sharp practices’ in the trade, being the guarantor of the notorious ‘Balfour Strad’, which turned out to be a brand new fake, made by the Voller brothers. Made by / G. A. Chanot / violin, viola, violoncello & / bow maker & restorer / Manchester. A.D. 1890 / No120. Model of Amati
