DARCHE, Charles Claude François Born 1821 Mirecourt France, died 1874 Brussels Belgium. Pupil of N. F. Vuillaume in Brussels. Established his own shop there in 1845. Stradivari model, high quality work, but often blamed for deleterious wood treatments used to age the materials artificially. Thin hard varnish of poor quality. Entered a quartet at Munich Exhibition 1854. Highly regarded restorer who worked extensively on the Andrea Amati cello from the ‘Charles IX’ set. Fait par C. F. Jüngerer Bruder von Nikolaus Darche. Er kam in jungen Jahren zu
N. F. Vuillaume, als dessen Schüler er gelten kann, und machte sich 1845 in
Brüssel selbständig. Seine Arbeit war im Ganzen gut, der Lack aber mager
und der Ton oft dumpf, was wohl hauptsächlich daher kam, dass er das Holz
durch chemische Processe alt machen wollte und dadurch verdarb. Als Reparateur
war er jedoch wegen seiner sorgsamen und treuen Geduldsarbeit ungemein
geschätzt.
