FICHTL, Martin Mathias (II) Born 1682, died 1768 Vienna Austria. Son and pupil of Martin Mathias Fichtl (I), above. Among the best Viennese makers of this period. Very disciplined Stainer model, beautifully finished and lacking the exaggerated features of many Stainer imitations. Soundholes quite widely spaced but expertly cut. Very fine red-brown varnish laid over a golden ground, although in some instances the varnish has darkened with oxidization over time. Martinus Mathias Fichtl / fec.
