Biographies

John Dilworth

FRIEDRICH, John Born 1858 Kassel Germany, died 1943 New York USA. Pupil of Schonger in Kassel. Worked for Möckel in Berlin, Hammig in Leipzig, and elsewhere in Germany. Emigrated to New York 1883 and established the company of John Friedrich & Bro., with his brother William, below. Employed many craftsmen. Awards at World’s Fair, Chicago 1893, and Lousiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis 1904. Produced some 300 violins, violas, cellos, and bows, all modelled on classical instruments, some with artificially aged and shaded varnish. Cellos comparatively rare, but much appreciated. Many bows, all on fine French models, branded: JOHN FRIEDRICH John Friedrich fecit / New York anno 1903
