FRITZ, Johann Born 1783 Pfaffenhofen, died 1825 Innsbruck Austria. Originally trained as a wood carver. Later apprenticed to the organ builder G. Gröber in Innsbruck. Made all sorts of musical instruments, including all violin family in typical Tyrolean forms. Good transparent varnish. In seinen Geigen erkennt man noch die Traditionen der alten Tyroler Schule,
in seinem Lack kommt er den Italienern nahe, die Brust nimmt er breit und
flach, der Boden ist mehr gewölbt als die Decke. Der Boden ist häufig nach
der Schwarte geschnitten und bei grösseren Geigen auch aus weniger schönem
Holz (Apfel- oder Birnbaum), Die Schnecke ist hübsch, die F-Löcher erinnern an Stainer, sind aber bei den Bratschen zu klein. Der Ton ist meistens recht gut, wenn auch nicht gross.
