John Dilworth
HAMMIG, Johann Christian Born 1732, died 1816 Markneukirchen Germany. Son and pupil of Johann Georg Hammig, below. Admitted to the Violin Makers’ Guild 1751. Well-executed Tyrolean patterns. Extravagant soundhole design, Stainer-derived, but upper and lower wings extended across the table bringing the lower finial very close to the corner. Preference for plain, one-piece backs. Golden brown varnish. Instruments dated after 1816 are the work of his sons. Branded: ‘*I.*C.*H.*’. Manuscript label: Joh: Christian Hammig / Music.
