Born in England, but settled in Edinburgh and became the great viol and lute maker there, about 1530-35. In the Scottish Treasurer’s accounts in 1535 is “Item to the Kingis Grace to Richard Hume, Inglismanne, quhilk suld mak violis to the Kingis Grace, to by stuffe for the samin xx lib.”

Er lebte zwar in Schottland, wo er zu grossem Ansehen gekommen
war, wird aber ausdrücklich als Engländer bezeichnet. Eine Eintragung von
1535 sagt: »Item to the Kingis Grace to Richard Hume, Inglismanne, guhilk
suld mak violis to the Kingis Grace, to by stuffe for the samin, XX lib.«
