Sohn und Schüler von Pierre Charles J. Um sich weiter zu vervollkommnen,
war er von 1869 an in Deutschland, ging dann nach Brüssel und Paris, überall
bei den ersten Meistern arbeitend, und trat 1880 als Theilhaber in die väterliche
Werkstatt ein. Er ist einer der bedeutendsten französischen Geigenmacher
der Gegenwart, er arbeitet nach Stradivari, Guarneri, Amati, Maggini etc., wobei
er die Resultate eigener Studien in Bezug auf die Holzstärke, die Umrisslinien etc. verwendet. Seine Geigen zeichnen sich durch grösste Sauberkeit der Arbeit
und eine ausserordentliche Gleichmässigkeit im Tone aus, die er zum Theil
seinem trefflichen, fetten Öllack zuschreibt; er wurde auf allen Ausstellungen
durch erste Preise ausgezeichnet. Er ist ausserdem ein gründlicher Kenner der
Musikgeschichte und des Instrumentenbaues seiner Heimath und hat mehrere
werthvolle Monographien veröffentlicht, ferner ist er Mitglied der archäologischen
Gesellschaft für Lothringen und mehrerer Academien, Officier de
l’Instruction Publique und Ritter des Leopold – Ordens etc. etc. Seine Geigen
haben am unteren Ende des Halses eine Brandmarke, im Innern einen gedruckten
Zettel mit seinem Namen, links ein Schildchen mit den Buchstaben A. J. durch ein Kreuz
getheilt und dem Meisterhut darüber, rechts das Wappen von Lothringen.
