John Dilworth
KAISER, Martin (I) Born 1642 Erkenbollingen, Füssen Germany, d.c.1695 Venice Italy. Nephew of Matthias, above. Resident in his uncle’s home in Venice from 1653. Recorded at his marriage in 1661 as a violin maker. 7/8 sized cello in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels dated 1679. Fine work on a well-regulated model with medium arch. Notable for a pierced and ornate rose in the upper table. Soundholes fully developed, low set and outswinging. Fine delicate red-brown varnish. Two violins also recorded, one in the collection of the Querini Stampella Foundation, Venice, dated 1685. Both have Amati form and refined workmanship very much in the style of his pupil M.
