John Dilworth

KAISER, Martin (I) Born 1642 Erkenbollingen, Füssen Germany, d.c.1695 Venice Italy. Nephew of Matthias, above. Resident in his uncle’s home in Venice from 1653. Recorded at his marriage in 1661 as a violin maker. 7/8 sized cello in the Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels dated 1679. Fine work on a well-regulated model with medium arch. Notable for a pierced and ornate rose in the upper table. Soundholes fully developed, low set and outswinging. Fine delicate red-brown varnish. Two violins also recorded, one in the collection of the Querini Stampella Foundation, Venice, dated 1685. Both have Amati form and refined workmanship very much in the style of his pupil M. Cecie Stainer

A German maker who settled in Venice; was working there in 1609. There is an arch-lute of this date in the Paris Conservatoire Collection.

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff

Vielleicht ein Schüler Tieffenbrucker’s oder Hieber’s und sicher, wie diese, deutscher Abstammung. Eine Archilaute von ihm besitzt das Museum des Pariser Conservatoriums und eine reicheingelegte Theorbe die Kgl. Sammlung alter Musikinstrumente in Berlin (No. 716). An dieser ist die Jahreszahl 1632 um so bemerkenswerther, als Brossard behauptet, dass der Cambist Hotteterre die Theorbe erst 1750 erfunden habe. Ein Violoncello mit der angeblichen Jahreszahl 1679 besitzt die Sammlung Correr in Venedig.
