KIENDL, Anton Born 1816 Mittenwald Germany, died 1871 Vienna Austria. Active in Vienna from 1843. Zither player and maker. Some violins attributed to him, these possibly Mirecourt productions with his label. Anton Kiendl in / Wien Josefstadt No. 18

Willibald Leo Lütgendorff+

In seiner Heimath erlernte er das Geigen- und Zithermachen und war auch
ein Virtuose auf der Zither. 1843 liess er sich in Wien nieder und arbeitete
unablässig an der Verbesserung seines Lieblingsinstrumentes. Er führte das
Quintensystem bei der Zither ein, vermehrte die Zahl der Saiten, so dass es
nunmehr möglich war, alle Tonarten anzuwenden. Er hat sich so besondere
Verdienste um das Instrument erworben und auch die Streichzither wesentlich
verbessert. Sein Geschäft dehnte sich sehr aus, zuletzt stellte er jährlich über
800 Zithern her.
