Nicolas (III) Born 1628. Son of Henri Médard (I), above. Instruments are labelled both from Paris and Nancy, but it is not certain whether he ever actually worked in Paris; this became a common affectation amongst later Mirecourt luthiers. The Brussels Musical Instruments Museum has a viol ornamented with fleur-de-lys dated 1701, and a viola of 1670 with painted decoration. Vannes cites another violin with the painted armorials of Charles IV, Duke of Lorraine. Other plain violins and violas show the usual Médard family style of Amatisé modelling with a slightly watery red varnish. Branded internally: ‘Nicolas Médard, à Nancy 1665’. Sohn von Henri I. M. Sein Beruf steht nicht fest, es ist aber wahrscheinlich,
dass er das väterliche Gewerbe fortsetzte, denn nur so liesse sich der lange
Zeitraum, in dem mit Nic. Medard bezeichnete Instrumente vorkommen, erklären.
Es muss aber noch einen vierten Nicolas M. gegeben haben, und erst auf diesen
könnte die Sage, dass er bei Stradivari gelernt hat, passen, obwohl Arbeiten
nicht dafür sprechen. Eine sechssaitige Viola von 1701 von Nic. Mdard, eingelegt
mit Lilien, Frauenköpfchen im Conservatorium zu Brüssel. Daselbst auch eine
1670 datirte Viola-Alto mit chinesischen Malereien. (S. Abb.)
